History of Spanaway Water Company
Spanaway Water Co. began as a small neighborhood water system to provide community water with greater certainty and eliminate the concerns about operating private individual wells. From this small neighborhood along Park Avenue, the core of “old” Spanaway, the system slowly expanded to an area generally bounded by McChord AFB and Fort Lewis to the west, the Fredrickson rail lines to the east, 208th St. E. to the south, and 144th St. E. to the north.
The Company officially incorporated in November 1953. Like many other of Pierce County’s older utilities, Spanaway Water Company was organized as a non-profit mutual company. As of 2007, Spanaway Water Company serves approximately 22,000 people. The water system includes over 100 miles of water mains, eleven wells, and three large storage tanks.
Growth in the Spanaway area has historically been steady. The expansion of housing development creates a constant need for improvements and upgrading of the system.
How do I open an Account?
You may open your account either by phone or in person. A Customer Service Representative will ask you a few questions to establish owner and address information and there will be a new account fee that will be charged on your first bill. Spanaway Water requires no deposits, but we ask that you pay your bill in full before the delinquent date. Your prompt payment allows us to operate efficiently.
If someone in your home is on life support equipment please notify Spanaway Water of your special needs.
How Do I Give Access to The Meter Reader?
It is the customers responsibility to always give the meter reader access to the meter.
- Please do not cover your water meter with pots or ceramics.
- Please do not park a vehicle over your water meter.
- Please do not disguise your water meter with beauty bark or decorative rock.
- Please do not allow shrubs around your meters to obstruct them from view.
- If you have a dog, the meter reader will try to befriend it so that reads can be taken with a minimum of inconvenience. At no time should you have dogs tethered in the meter area.
Do I Get Credit for Fixing My Leaks?
In an effort to encourage our customers to have their leaks repaired, Spanaway Water Co. will reimburse you for part of the water leak. We will look at your average bill and everything above average will be considered part of the leak bill. The leak portion of the bill will be split so Spanaway Water will pay half and the customer will pay half. We will need a written request for a leak adjustment, the date the leak was repaired, the nature and location of the leak, and a copy of the repair bill or materials receipt. This should be done prior to the next billing date.
Only one adjustment shall be made during any 12 month billing cycle.
The objective of this policy is to encourage the responsible use and conservation of water, to provide incentives for the rapid repair of leaks, to conserve our water resources for all members through the timely elimination of leaks, and to conform to or exceed all Federal, State, and local rules and regulations related to water conservation.
